State of North Texas 2026

What does quality of life look like across North Texas—and how is it changing? The State of North Texas 2026 offers a data-driven portrait of residents’ experiences, challenges, and expectations, drawing on the third annual William C. Short North Texas Quality of Life Survey. Produced by the North Texas Quality of Life Initiative at The University of Texas at Dallas, the report brings residents’ perspectives into conversations about the region’s future.

Based on 1,933 usable survey responses in 2026, the report reveals both the strengths of North Texas communities and the pressures facing their residents. More than three-quarters of respondents are satisfied with where they live. Yet 62% of renters report spending at least 30% of their after-tax income on rent, and 53% say they sometimes or often run out of purchased food without money for more.

The report also examines attitudes toward the American Dream, the growing role of artificial intelligence, civic participation, and assessments of local-government performance. Analysis across the 2024, 2025, and 2026 survey waves identifies notable trends, including weakening neighborhood commitment, declining expressions of hopefulness, and less favorable perceptions of local-government performance.

Comparisons across Collin, Denton, Tarrant, northern Dallas County, and southern Dallas County reveal how experiences differ within the region. Throughout, the report distinguishes current-year findings from statistically supported trends, helping readers understand both what residents report today and which patterns warrant further attention.

For civic leaders, community organizations, researchers, businesses, and residents, The State of North Texas 2026 offers a common foundation for understanding regional needs, asking better questions, and informing collaborative action.
